Brief Introduction to Electric Motorcycle

An electric motorcycle operates similarly to a traditional gasoline-powered motorcycle but with an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine. Instead of filling up with gasoline, you charge its batteries by plugging it into an electric outlet. This type of motorcycle offers instant torque and smooth acceleration, and it's generally quieter than its gasoline counterpart. Plus, with fewer moving parts, they often require less maintenance.

Essential Components of an Electric Motorcycle

An electric motorcycle, like any other motorcycle, is made up of numerous components. All of these components are necessary for the vehicle to function correctly. However, here are three essential components and how they contribute to an electric motorcycle’s operation:

Rechargeable battery
The rechargeable battery is arguably the most important component of the electric motorcycle. After all, the e-motorbike cannot operate without it.
Unlike other vehicles with a large engine, this space is replaced by the electric batteries in this type of vehicle. These are generally 12 V batteries with a 6-unit cell covered with a plastic body.
An electric motorcycle usually uses one battery which can contain multiple battery cells. These batteries are rechargeable and can last for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type and several other factors.
These are some of the common types of batteries you’ll typically find in an electric motorcycle: Lithium, Lithium-ion, Lithium-ion phosphate, Lead acid, Nickel metal hydride

Electric Engine
The electric engine is what receives power from the battery and converts it to mechanical energy in the vehicle.
In electric motorcycles, the engines are smaller than those found in gas-powered vehicles. As a result, you’ll typically find them at the back wheel, connected by a chain and sprocket.
Unlike other types, the electric engine is simple in design. The two crucial components of gas-powered engines are a cylinder and a piston, which are absent in electric motors.
Also, unlike gasoline vehicles with internal combustion engines that take several seconds to attain their full power and torque, electric motors can reach their maximum power and torque almost instantly.
Additionally, electric engines do not require engine oil, which is required for lubrication in gas engines. This makes them a cleaner, environmentally friendly choice.

Brakes
While your electrical motorcycle battery will provide the power you need to move, and the electric engine will get you on your way, your e-motorbike brakes are the reason you can slow down and stop safely.
However, unlike traditional motorcycles, the two brakes in electric motorcycles typically go on the handlebars, one on each. You’ll find the rear tire brakes on the left handlebar (since there is no clutch), while the brakes on the right handlebar will slow down your front tire.

How Does an Electric Motorcycle Work?

1

Charging the Battery
The magic starts with the battery of your electric motorcycle. Charging it is similar to that of an electric car that uses an electric charging station or outlet installed near your housing area. It can take anywhere between 4 to 24 hours to reach full charge, depending on the type of battery your motorcycle has. For example, lithium batteries are fast-charging and can be fully recharged within 1 to 2 hours. Where else, a lead acid battery will take over 12 hours to charge to full capacity.

2

Starting the Engine
Once you charge the battery, you can start your electric motorcycle with just a turn of the key – very much like a conventional motorbike. What’s different is, instead of the pistons moving up and down in the cylinder block, driven by explosions of a fuel-air mixture that has been ignited by a spark, the electric motorcycle just transforms the power from the battery directly to the engine.

3

Power Generation
To generate power to move, you have to ensure that electricity from the battery pack is delivered to the engine of your electric motorbike. In other words, your electric motorcycle will not move or accelerate if its battery is not charged. It’s pretty much like trying to ride a conventional motorbike with an empty fuel tank.

4

Acceleration
When you accelerate on your electric motorcycle with a twist of the throttle, the power going out from the battery into the electric engine will increase. Moving parts within the engine will transfer the power into the sprockets and the chain will start moving. Movement of the chain will activate rotation of the rear wheel and your motorcycle will start going forward.
And because of the simplified mechanics of an electric engine, it causes very low friction in the engine making acceleration of an electric motorcycle much faster and more powerful than that of a gas-powered motorcycle.

What to Look Out for When Riding Your Electric Motorcycle for the First Time

In the following paragraphs, we walk you through what to expect when riding an electric motorcycle for the first time:

Instant Acceleration
Unlike gas-powered motorcycles, e-motorcycles will give you instant acceleration. In other words, immediately you twist the throttle, the bike will give 100% torque and accelerate instantly. This is quite unlike bikes with petrol engines that need some time to get going.
This means that as long as your e-motorcycle is switched on, you should not twist the throttle if you don’t intend to get moving. Otherwise, you may end up falling off the bike. Not to worry, you’ll get familiar with this high-level acceleration with time.

No Mechanical Cues
Another thing you need to look out for when riding an electric motorcycle for the first time is its lack of mechanical cues.
You’ll typically not hear any acoustic sounds associated with acceleration, change in gears, or maximum speed. Instead, you’ll only hear a gentle buzz when accelerating on an e-motorbike. You’ll also need to keep an eye on your bike display to keep track of your riding situation.

No Engine Braking
In addition to the silent rides you’ll get on an electric motorcycle, there is essentially zero engine braking on e-motorbikes.
This is another thing you need to keep in mind when riding an e-motorcycle. Interestingly, some electric motorcycles have regeneration systems that act as engine brake. But, for the most part, you’ll typically not have any engine braking when riding e-motorbikes.

Speed Increases Downhill
Most gas-powered bikes (and even cars) will usually help you slow down when going downhill by leveraging their gears. But, electric bikes will not since they have no gears. Instead, e-motorbikes will, in fact, accelerate as you go downhill.
Therefore, this is another thing you must prepare for when riding an electric motorcycle for the first time. As a rule of thumb, we recommend keeping at least one finger on your brake lever, especially when riding down a slope.

It Is Super Silent
While you probably already know that electric motorcycles are significantly more silent than gas-powered bikes, it is easy to forget that.
You can’t tell whether your bike is on or not by just listening. This means you can set your bike going without you if you mistakenly twist the throttle.

Pros and Cons of Riding an Electric Motorcycle

Advantages Of Electric Bikes
By now, it’s safe to assume electric bikes are more than a fad. Electric motorcycles offer several benefits to riders, including:

  • Excellent Performance in Select Models: High-grade electric motorbike models have powerful motors and impressive pound-feet of torque numbers.
  • Reliable Motors: Electric motors have fewer parts compared to internal combustion engines, so they break down less often.
  • Easier Maintenance: Forget about oil changes or replacing spark plugs – electric engines require little maintenance over their lifespan and may endure up to 20 years.
  • A quiet, fume-free ride: Motorcyclists who ride electric bikes don’t have to deal with exhaust fumes or loud engine noises. However, the latter could be a drawback in some cases since your motorbike’s noise may make it easier for other motorists to notice you. And you might miss the roar of your engine as you head out on the road.
  • Environmental Benefits: Since electric motorcycles don’t emit carbon dioxide, they are generally a more sustainable, environmentally friendly option.

Downsides Of Electric Motorcycles
Despite the rapidly evolving technology, motorcycles that run on electric power still fall short of some bikers’ expectations. Riders who opt for electric motorcycles have to put up with these down-sides:

  • Long Charging Times: Fully charging an electric motorbike may take anywhere between half an hour to overnight, compared to just a few minutes of filling up a gas tank. This becomes a major drawback on the open road – and that’s before you consider that not all electric bikes are compatible with all charger types.
  • Reduced Range: Compared to internal combustion engines, electric motorcycles have a significantly shorter range. Electricity still offers lower energy density than gas or diesel. On average, a single charge will keep an electric motorbike going for 40 to 100 miles, depending on battery size (although some models boast a significantly longer range), while a tank of gas will usually last for at least 150 miles.
  • An Even Shorter Range in Cold Weather: Lower temperatures can decrease battery capacity, so your electric motorcycle’s range may drop further in the winter.
  • Higher Upfront Costs: While an electric bike may ultimately save you money on fuel and maintenance, the initial purchase cost is generally higher compared to gas-powered bikes.

Simplified Maintenance: Maintaining an electric motorcycle is much simpler than maintaining a gas-powered motorcycle. Electric motorcycles have fewer moving parts and don't require oil changes or other routine maintenance tasks. However, it is still important to perform regular checks on the battery and charging system and to keep the motorcycle clean and well-lubricated.

Power Preservation: One of the essential steps in maintaining your electric motorcycle is to keep the battery charged. Lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in electric motorcycles, require regular charging to maintain their health and ensure maximum range. It is crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the charging cycle for your specific motorcycle.

Charging System Check: Another critical component to check is the charging system. It's essential to make sure that the charging system is working correctly and that the battery is charging at the correct rate. This will ensure that the battery is being charged efficiently and that it will last for the longest possible time.

Tire Care: It's also important to check the tires regularly for wear and tear and to ensure they are properly inflated. Proper tire pressure is crucial to the motorcycle's performance, handling, and range. Underinflated tires can cause the battery to work harder, reducing the motorcycle's range and overall performance.

Cleanliness Counts: Keeping your electric motorcycle clean is also essential to maintaining its performance and longevity. Regular cleaning helps prevent dirt and debris from damaging the electrical components and other parts of the motorcycle. It is also important to keep the motorcycle well-lubricated to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the moving parts.
