Recently, we learned from relevant sources that Alan Estevez, head of US export control and under secretary of Commerce for industry and Security, said on July 16 that the US Department of Commerce plans to issue proposed regulations on connected vehicles next month (August), which are expected to impose restrictions on some software developed in China and other countries that are considered adversaries.

Alan Estevez added: "We are looking at some parts and some software, not the complete vehicle, but some of the key drive components that manage the software and data of the vehicle, and these parts have to be manufactured in allied countries." In May, the Commerce secretary said the department planned to issue proposed rules for connected cars in China this fall. In theory, it is possible to imagine the worst outcome, which is that the car software is disabled while millions of cars are on the road.

China's foreign ministry has urged the US to "respect the laws of the market economy and the principle of fair competition". The Chinese side believes that Chinese cars stand out in the fierce market competition and continue to carry out technological innovation, so it is widely popular in the world. The administration has proposed steep tariffs on Chinese electric cars and other goods, and wants them to go into effect by August 1. (Compilation/Auto Home Yao Yu)
